    Russian is spoken by 280 million people; it ranks with English and Chinese as one of three major world languages. Over a quarter of the world's scientific literature is published in Russian. With the end of the Cold War, Russia has opened its door to international businesses, banking, mass media, culture, and entertainment, and with it grew motivations for studying Russian language. Russia continues to play a central role in global politics, and experience shows that the demand on foreign experts with Russian language skills grows. Although with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the reasons to study Russian may appear to have lessened, Russia is still country, rich in many ways: literature, drama, music, and culture. In addition language continues to be the medium of exchange with the former republics of the Soviet Union, at least until their own languages gain a larger following in this country.

One of the main reasons to study Russian in Irkutsk is the possibility to travel to lake Baikal! There are numerous reasons to visit the lake and experience the way of life over there. There are fresh air, tasty water from the lake, rocky mountains, and beautiful forests for people who want to be close to the nature. The usual tourist activities like trekking, biking, camping, kayaking, fishing occur to be unusual if it’s done at this magic lake.
Located in the south of Eastern Siberia, Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake on the planet, and the largest natural reservoir of fresh water in the world. It is also unique for the properties of its water, and for its enormous biodiversity and number of endemic species. For these reasons, Lake Baikal officially became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Group courses

    Classes are conducted in small groups of maximum 8 students. On arrival you will be asked to take part in a short interview, so as to enable we could place you in the most appropriate group according to your level of Russian language skills. The size and composition of study groups are fixed to provide the best possible conditions in which to learn. The standard language programmes invariably focus on the following aspects: phonetics and intonation, building and expanding of vocabulary in Russian, grammar, and speech skills development focused on fluency and accuracy in Russian.

Individual courses

    We are also able to arrange individual programmes for students. These individual courses guarantee that you get the best opportunities to improve your speech and understanding of the language, as well as your grammar. The main difference from the group courses is that you are able to steer the type and content of your language teaching directly. You can dictate what you want to focus on, for example, everyday language, business language or perhaps even more academic language.

     Providing that you satisfactorily completed a program, you will get a certificate indicating the type and length of courses attended.

Home stay

     For those of you wishing to stay with a Russian family you will be given your own room, access to shared bathroom facilities, kitchen, telephone and television. Breakfast will be provided for you every day. Living with a family gives you the excellent opportunity to practice your Russian in a relaxed atmosphere and to experience Russian hospitality and family life. All families that offer accommodation to students have been visited and approved by our centre.
